Mesothelioma Cancer
Mesothelioma cancer is also known as asbestos cancer. It is most aggressive cancer, some difficult to treat and rare which affects 3000 people each year. Mesothelioma cancer is a form of cancer which is caused by inhalation of asbestos (mineral used in industry) particles. Mesothelium is a protective double wall layer which covers the internal organs of the body including lungs and heart. It also covers the male and female reproductive organs. Between the walls, the cells produce fluid. These fluids make the easy movement for heart and lungs within the chest cavity. If the asbestos particle inhaled, they harm the Mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma cancer mostly affects the men between the ages of 50 to 70 who were employed in an asbestos environment. Women also have some risk whose male family members worked in asbestos environment. The occupations mostly associated with mesothelioma cancer are shipyard workers, electrician, construction worker, boilermakers, pipefitter etc. related to airborne asbestos fibers. In some cases entire colony has been affected with the asbestos presence in the air. In United Stated 2000 to 3000 cases of mesothelioma cancer diagnosed each year. In some country much more case reported.
Mesothelioma Cancer Symptoms:
Symptoms of mesothelioma cancer are depends on the stage.
Early Stage:
- Shortness of breath
- Coughing
(This may be due to chest pain)
Later Stage:
- Unexplained weight changes
- Anemia
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Swelling or pain in the abdomen
- Swelling of the feet.

- Fever
- Sweating
- Night Sweats
- Weight loss
Mesothelioma Cancer Causes:
Mesothelioma cancer is a rare cancer and more common in men than women. Some causes of Mesothelioma cancer are as follows:
Asbestos: The main cause of Mesothelioma cancer is inhalation of asbestos.
Radiation: Another cause of Mesothelioma cancer is radiation from chemical called thorium dioxide.
Mesothelioma Cancer Diagnosis:
Mesothelioma cancer takes long time to develop and symptoms show gradually. Mesothelioma cancer shows any symptoms after the 15 to 50 years exposure of asbestos fibers.
A specialized doctor in Mesothelioma cancer takes imaging test like CT, MRI, Ultrasound and X-Rays. Doctor performs the biopsy of the pleural or peritoneal tissue for confirmation.
